Founded by Buddy Maughon in 1969 as Northeast Meats, the market provided fresh cut meats and fresh produce. When Buddy retired in 2000, the market was re-opened across the street by his sons Rhett and Mark Maughon as Oak Grove Market.
In July 2010, Oak Grove Market made the transition to new ownership! The market continues to offer the same community atmosphere and quality products.
Meet Jeremy Turner, one of our new owners:
In 2002, Jeremy joined the Dekalb County Police Department in Atlanta to help protect and defend his community. He had a vested interest in this mission, having lost his brother Jonathan to a hit-and- run drunk driver in 1998 and his father four months later to an armed robbery. Jeremy worked as a uniformed officer until 2005 when he was promoted to Detective with the Major Felony Unit investigating robbery/homicide cases. In 2008, he was chosen to spearhead an interactive, community-based policing program in his district/division.
Patrolling the streets of Atlanta, Jeremy quickly realized how isolated the city’s homeless population really was. Many of the disenfranchised Jeremy encountered were veterans and families grappling with a myriad of issues, i.e., lost employment, a lack of affordable housing, domestic violence, mental illness, and chemical dependency.
This phenomena struck a resonating chord with Jeremy, whose brother Jonathan had served as a marine in the Gulf War. He could also identify with struggling families because he has the responsibility for a wife and three children of his own. Since Jeremy had dreamed of launching a program that would bring medical services, food/supplies directly to the homeless. In addition, he wanted the program to serve as a liaison to expeditiously link those most in need to resources in the community. His dream was fully realized in 2008 with the creation of Contribute2America (C2A), a nonprofit organization he founded to help fill the void in current services for Atlanta’s homeless population. He hopes to one day carry C2A’s vision and mission to other cities throughout the country.

"If Atlanta's size and scope seem overwhelming, a visit to the Oak Grove Market is in order. Truly a slice of Americana, this all-purpose market and eatery evokes a simpler time. Shoppers find themselves surrounded by Betty Boop, Elvis, and Shoney's Big Boy -- all characters in the panoramic mural that encompasses the the store.
Bicycles parked out front indicate a posse of kids inside ordering scoops of Blue Bunny ice cream. Fresh food lovers can pick up the best of the season's ripening produce. The foremost reason to visit the market, however, is the $8.99 filet mignon. Wrapped in bacon, it is an eight-ounce slab of unmarbled perfection. Finiky shoppers will be pleased to find Black Angus beef, Fieldale Natural chicken, Inland seafood, and Boars Head cold cuts.
Here, everyone smiles, they make conversation, neighbors catch up with each other, giddy kids run around hyped up on dime store confections, and for a moment, Atlanta doesn't seem like such a big city after all."
